What to Expect From Your Mammogram at the Lorraine Homan Wellness Centre

Updated: 19 hours ago

Getting a mammogram doesn’t have to be a stressful or uncomfortable experience. At the Lorraine Homan Wellness Centre, we’ve reimagined the process to make it as calming, dignified, and supportive as possible — because we know that when it comes to your health, comfort matters.

This specialised service is offered exclusively at our female-focused wellness centre, where all staff members — from the radiographers to the support team — are women.

Sister Fransie and Lauren, the heart of the centre, are known for their warmth, professionalism, and the care they extend to every woman who walks through our doors. From the soft pink walls to the calming atmosphere, every detail has been thoughtfully chosen to create a space where women feel at ease.

What Is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray used to detect changes in breast tissue. It’s a crucial screening tool that can spot early signs of breast cancer — even before symptoms appear. The goal is early detection, which allows for more effective treatment and better outcomes.

When and How Often Should You Get a Mammogram?

Doctors typically recommend that women begin annual mammograms from the age of 40. However, if you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, your healthcare provider may suggest starting earlier or screening more frequently.

Does It Hurt?

The truth is, you may feel some pressure, but for most women, the procedure is quick and tolerable. The compression is necessary to get clear images but only lasts a few seconds per breast. Our staff is trained to explain each step, ensure you're comfortable, and make the process as smooth and gentle as possible.

What Should You Wear?

We recommend wearing a two-piece outfit, as you’ll be asked to remove your top. Don’t worry, a comfortable, clean robe will be provided for your privacy and ease. Try to avoid wearing lotions, powders, or deodorant on the day of your mammogram, as they can interfere with the imaging.

A Final Word

At the Lorraine Homan Wellness Centre, your well-being is our priority. With expert staff, a serene environment, and a deeply caring approach, we aim to make your visit feel less like a medical appointment, and more like self-care.

Because taking care of your health is one of the most empowering things you can do.
